Modern Biology & Visions of Humanity

Modern Biology & Visions of Humanity
Ethical questions arising from developments in modern biology, such as "If we are genetically determined, where is free will? "Is it right for humans to create new foods? and "Should organizations be allowed to hold the keys to the production of vast amounts of food globally in the form of a patent? are discussed in this collection of presentations from the 2004 European Commission sponsored conference "Modern Biology and Visions of Humanity." Organized into four sections, the contributions from this event reflect on the complex relationship between science and society and touch on such subjects as what are the benefits of science, who decides its uses, and how science relates to other areas of human creativity. Leading figures in the worlds of science and the arts take sides in these essays in either promoting the products and services biology provides, challenging biology's vision of humanity, or questioning the whole approach of Western science from a political perspective.

Industrial Ecology by Thomas E. Graedel,
Industrial Ecology by Thomas E. Graedel,
To a significant degree, the first edition of this book defined the new field of industrial ecology, the restructuring of technological activity to incorporate environmental concerns. Important topics from that book are updated here, among them life-cycle assessment product design for the environment the incorporation of environmental considerations into product development integrating industrial ecology into corporations budgets and cycles In addition, the new edition includes entire chapters on topics that are becoming or have become newly important to the field: the biological model applied to industrial systems the status of resources the transition from products to services systems analysis Earth systems engineering and management While still serving as a practical guide to product designers and corporate managers, the new edition also provides guidance for the broader task of mapping a societal evolution to a more sustainable world, thus justifying industrial ecology's label as "the science and technology of sustainability.

Farming Farming was extremely labor-intensive and still relied heavily on human and horse-power. Many once intermittent streams are farmed; many perennial streams with large wet meadows adjacent to them are now intermittent or deeply incised. Leading figures in the form of a patent? The emergence and refinement of techniques in molecular biology and cell fusion are being employed by companies to work in cooperation with chemical engineers to achieve pragmatic commercial goals.
